Vehicle tracking systems
Investing in a vehicle tracking system can result in many benefits for a company. The installation of a tracker system can result in real cost savings due to the increased security and information about your fleet. Installing a tracker on a vehicle significantly reduces its likelihood of being stolen and increase the chance of recovery if it is taken. This means that insurance premiums will generally drop when installing a tracker. Other cost savings include; reductions in fuel costs, typically around twenty per cent, due to better route planning and less driver speeding and reductions in tax liabilities for benefit in kind payments.
Costs of a System
To purchase a tracking system will vary depending on how many vehicles you own, whether you buy or lease your system, and the type of tracker you purchase. To purchase a basic vehicle tracker generally costs from one hundred pounds upwards plus the costs of installation. If you are buying for several vehicles, you may be able to obtain a discount. Also, some suppliers offer second hand trackers at lower prices. Some businesses choose to lease their vehicle trackers. Leases are typically three to five years in length with the latter having lower monthly costs. For a basic tracker, systems can start from in the region of fifty pence per vehicle per day on a five year lease. Lease often include maintenance support and upgrades in the monthly price. Again for larger fleets you may be able to negotiate a discount.
Costs of Additional Features
There are many features available in modern tracking systems that can increase the cost of the system. One example is messaging systems which allow you to talk to the driver. Including these an option would add an additional ten to thirty pence per vehicle per day onto a lease. Other features available that could be included are; vehicle life cycle and repair management software, the ability to disable stolen vehicle remotely, or alarms should the driver break down. Some of these additional features may reduce other costs in your business, for instance by automating certain tasks, so the net cost should be calculated.
