Motion Activated GPS Tracking Devices

GPS Trackers

GPS trackers are used by individuals and companies to keep track of many different types of asset. GPS works by installing a tracking device onto an asset such as a vehicle or container. The tracker then sends a signal determining its location to a satellite. This information is then passes to a base computer which uses software to constantly track the location of the device.

GPS trackers are not only used to protect assets against theft, but also for route planning, fleet management, reducing insurance costs and ensuring driver safety. GPS trackers can either be active, in that they continuously transmit their location, or passive when they record details of a particular journey to be downloaded when a vehicle returns to base.

Motion Activated Trackers

Motion activated trackers contain internal motion sensors which detect movement. As soon as they sense the movement they activate the device which then begins tracking. There are several advantages of a motion activated tracker. Firstly as, trackers are often run on batteries this ensure the battery life is maximised. Secondly only important information is tracked about actual movements. Thirdly motion activated trackers can be configured to send an SMS message, or activate a warning sound as soon as they begin tracking, this can be a very effective anti-theft system.

Costs

The cost for purchasing motion activated trackers depends on the type and quantity being purchased. To purchase a single tracker can start from around one hundred and fifty pounds and reach several hundred pounds. On top of this, you may need to factor in the costs of installation and some trackers require a monthly subscription to be paid. For companies interested in purchasing several motion activated trackers there is the option to lease the product.

The advantages of leasing trackers include the ability to upgrade if required and support with repairs. The cost of leasing trackers will depend upon the number being leased, the length of the lease and the features required. Basic trackers typically start from under a pound per device per day, however options such as SMS alerts or messaging systems will increase the price.

Alternatives

An alternative to GPS trackers are RFIS trackers. These work in a similar way but use a radio signal instead of the GPS signal. The advantage of RFID motion activated trackers is that they can provide a much more accurate location than GPS and the signal is very difficult to block. However, investing in RFID technology requires a greater initial outlay for companies as it requires specialist receivers.
