Stolen Vehicle Tracking System Costs

Tracker Options

Vehicle trackers operate by using a Global Positioning System to allow their location and speed to be monitored. One of the most important benefits of vehicle tracking systems is that the installation of a tracking system means an owner, or the police are able to locate a stolen car easily. The addition of a stolen vehicle tracker system will act as a deterrent to potential thieves. There are two types of vehicle tracking system on the market today. Firstly there are passive systems, these are initiated by an event such as the car starting or the door being opened. They then track the movement of the vehicle and the information can be downloaded when the vehicle is returned. The second type of tracker, which is much more suited to tracking stolen vehicles is a live or active system. This type of tracker relays real time information about the cars location, speed and direction to the tracking software, allowing any stolen car to be instantly tracked.

Purchase Costs

To purchase a live vehicle tracking system will depend upon the users requirements. Some users may simply require a basic tracker to be used in the event of the vehicle being stolen. Others, such as businesses with a large fleet may want add on extras such as messaging systems so at other times the the tracker can be used to help the business run efficiently. To purchase an individual active tracker typically costs in the region of two hundred pounds upwards. In addition, installation fees will be charged which typically start from one hundred pounds. The software supplied with the tracking device is often free and there is usually no limit on the number of the purchasers computers it can be installed upon. Installing a tracker may result in savings in other areas such as insurance premiums for individuals and businesses. These savings may offset the cost of installing a tracker device.

Leasing

Another option, most often used by businesses is to lease stolen vehicle trackers. The lease costs vary depending on the type of tracker required but for a basic tracker with no messaging capacity can be in the region of fifty pence per vehicle per day for a three year contract, and less for a five year contract. An advantage of leasing stolen vehicle trackers is that upgrades can be provided by the leasing company if the businesses requirements change over time. The disadvantage is that this will be an ongoing cost and the business will not own the assets in the form of the stolen vehicle tracker devices.
