GPS - The future of Monitoring Vehicle Speed?
With the rise of fixed and mobile speeding cameras many people are turning to GPS technology to monitor the speed of their vehicles or fleet of vehicles. Companies may want to monitor the speed of their employees not just to avoid speeding tickets but also to protect the image of their companies. Domestic car users may also want to monitor the speed of the vehicle when it is borrowed by someone else, their teenager for example. But how do vehicle speed monitoring systems actually work?
The Basics
Vehicle speed monitoring systems use GPS, the same technology that is used in satellite navigation systems. A tracking device is placed within a vehicle and it emits a signal that is then picked up by satellites orbiting the earth. This information is then relayed to, and then displayed on, a computer in a remote location. The software can record the time taken to travel between two distances and therefore calculates the speed. The software can then alert the user of the exact speed of a vehicle at any time. Most monitoring systems can send alerts when a speed limit has been breached.
Why do you need a Speed Monitoring System?
These systems make drivers much more aware of their speed so they are less likely to break the limit and incur a fine. Driving at the speed limit is also much safer so there is less chance of drivers crashing or having serious accidents. Insurance companies also look favourably on the technology meaning a reduction in your premiums is likely. Driving at the speed limit can also save money on fuel as it is more efficient to travel at the correct speed.
Vehicle monitoring systems are an ideal way of ensuring both domestic and commercial drivers drive at the speed limit. This not only helps avoid expensive speeding fines and points but also reduces the chance of accidents and injuries. The system uses GPS technology which is reliable and relatively inexpensive. It can also work anywhere in the world. Whilst some many argue the systems are an invasion of privacy there is little doubt that vehicle monitoring systems actually help to ensure a driver's safety.
